![]() Corsets vs. Bodices I have worn an over-bust bodice during my many years of Medieval reenacting, but I must say that a bodice has NOTHING on a corset. From my experience, all the bodice does is push the chest up and in, creating the dreaded uni-boob. An under-bust bodice is not practical for those of us that are larger than a B cup since it causes an unattractive overflowing look. No support and nothing is left to the imagination. I do not want to say that a bodice is bad, because it is definitely not. I do think that the bodice is the best thing to get some attention in the chest-al region. Go to any Renaissance Faire ... what are all the guys ooggling over? The wenches in their bodices. Over-bust or under-bust, doesn't matter. They both draw attention to boobs and we all know that guys love that. However, for the sexy, feminine, hourglass figure, a corset is the only way to go. Drawing the waist in and leaving the rest of the body fairly unrestrained. I recently completed my first REAL corset. Not the kind that you buy at the lingerie or adult store ... a TRUE corset complete with 20 steel bones, a steel busk and two sets of laces up the back. It's a Civil War style (I liked the style and it looked comfortable for everyday wear). I could not believe when I laced it up and tightened it that my waist measurement decreased by NINE inches. I was totally amazed and, I must say, it is very sexy. I could breathe (which I was concerned about) and the only movement that was really restricted was bending at the waist (which a Lady never does anyway). My posture was also much improved and I imagine that I gained an inch or two in height. My next project is an Elizabethan Corset (Queen Elizabeth ROCKS). I think that I will like that one better than the Civil War since that is more the era that I am interested in. I'm just not sure how comfortable it will be since it covers the hips. I am concerned about sitting, and walking, for that matter. Although I am very big on style, comfort is most important to me. Especially while at a Faire for a weekend in 100+ degree weather. Then, if I make the corset, I will have to make an appropriate gown. I'm not really looking forward to all that sewing, but I don't think that my leggings and men's tunic will go well with something so elegant. Yes, I dress like a guy sometimes. Hey, I live in Florida and it's just too damn hot here for the yards and yards of fabric of a gown. I will put on a bodice over my tunic if I want to look halfway feminine (I still carry my dagger and sword though). If you would like a corset of your own.....
